The 2nd Global Model UN gave me perspective. It was a promotion, a recognition and an eyeopener. It is a continuing experience and a never-ending story. I know all good things must come to an end, but I don't believe that GMUN 2010 will be one of those things that will end for me. I've learnt so much, from people all over the world, I found patience, where there was none to be found. I worked with some of the smartest and most unique people from all over the world and I learnt a lot about myself in the process. I came away from this experience with more faith in the United Nations and what it stands for, and yet also a more critical eye for the flaws and imperfections.

I had an amazing time and thankfully, did not to actually bring a camera along with me to the conference thanks to the kind folks @ Waggener Edstrom, who lent me the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. Like the UN, it does some seriously amazing stuff. Like amazing pictures and Timescape, which lent a gorgeous chronological and almost dream like quality to all the things I did on the phone. However, the execution was sometimes, a little flawed and it felt like 90% of it was all there, it just needed another 10% to make it perfect.

I had a great time in Kuala Lumpur, and I would give you more than just a few short sentences, but it'd be impossible. I need 1000 words. For Each day. So I give you 10 pictures. One for each day. 10 pictures for the memory of 10 perfect, frightening, amazing, emotional days.

The Singtel Diet and Facebook

First the Good news: Singtel now lets you use a free version of Facebook with no pictures and just text at 0.facebook.com. This is optimised particularly for Cellular phones and will not incur data charges should you choose to use it. Whee, Facebook domination!

And The SingTel Diet.

I've been having a rather scary experience lately with Singtel and yet it has also been perfectly pleasant.

Singtel's been very commonly known as Stinktel largely because of it's mediocre customer service and what seems to be terrible support. The experience I've had lately seemed to paint a much more nuanced look at the conglomerate that does a large majority of the telecoms for our small island nation.

I recently applied for Mio Home, Singtel's package deal which includes broadband, TV coverage (where ESPN recently switched), and landline. The experience at ComCentre was not only great but patient and knowledgable. The service staff that dealt with me took the time to try and explain everything to me. And my appointment date for installation was set for 16th of July 2-4 pm.

Cut to 16th of July. 2-4pm. There was no set up dude, not butt crack brigade. No. Nothing. Not a phone call, not a peep. Cue Jerrick's angry phonecall to Singtel (Partially because Jerrick MISSED lunch for Singtel). The lady on the other side was… clueless to put it politely. However, she had at least the intelligence to escalate the issue to a manager. And boy was he a Manager. He said that he would coordinate across Comcentre, taking down the name of the guy who did the work over in ComCentre because he had set my appointment date for the 31st of December (WHAT?) and with the technical team, AND he would also make sure the technical team would work it out.

So cut to new appointment date: 19th of July. 10ish. Phone call from Singtel Customer Care, a very apologetic lady calling to say Sorry Mr. Lim but we can't make it 2-4, will 6-8 work? Cue Accomodating Jerrick. Yes I will have take out dinner instead, and survive on Fishball Noodles (very nice btw thanks for asking) for your sake. Cut to 930… Mom asks… Are they coming?

So today here we stand at 1202, July 20th. I had made one final phone call earlier, and yet again, a HIGHLY apologetic and accommodating dude from Singtel was on the phone explaining that my appointment had been set for the 20th at 2-4… and he apologised for the mistake. Wait. Was that My or YOUR Mistake? And yet again it seems like I have to cancel a lunch appointment, or EVEN lunch itself for Singtel.

It seems like the best solution for weight loss is NOT in fact, a healthy diet, and exercise like the doctors recommend. But subscribing to Mio, because that way you don't have to eat at all.

Referring back to my initial statement though, why did I say that the experience has been perfectly pleasant? Because I genuinely believe that the people who tried to help me DID believe in their technical team's ability to ford the rivers, and parang those foreboding trees standing between themselves and my home. And they did also believe that it would work out perfectly and magically provide me the ability to watch football at odd hours of the morning in the comfort of my own home. However that belief seems to be tempered by a COMPLETELY incompetent engineering team who can't even seem to work the device known commonly as the Telephone, to report home that erm. Can't make it, SORRY.

And the worst part in ALL this is – I have no choice in the matter. If I want ESPN. I must switch to Singtel.

Back in Singapore

It's been about a week since I got back to Singapore and the days seem to have ran right by me. I've been spending a lot of time with the family and simply loving it. But I've also been able to travel to Bali in this time (and getting brutally sunburnt in the process).

But what has really shaken me up is my wonderful realisation of sorts, that despite all their flaws and their wonderful insanities, my family is still the people that I have. They're my people, and despite what may be easier to do sometimes, to seek refuge and solace in friends, and acquaintances, but in the end, it's actually family that holds me to account, that can be harsh but not unforgiving, and like the sunlight that burnt my back to a lovely crisp, coz at least now I've got some colour.

Which is fading. Oh Well…

Iomega and Me

I've been an Iomega fan from a very young age, having used their Superdrive originally to back up my old computer onto rewritable CDs. Back then it was an external drive that I used to back up my Data. I also remember using those old School ZIP drives with the Apple Macs and saving my little videos onto it. However now in this day and age, rewritable CDs and DVDs are old hat and we all do our backups onto hard drives or into the cloud. Iomega has finally returned to Singapore with a few new tricks up it's sleeve. And the gadgets like the Zip and Jaz drives though old have definitely made a strong impression on my early tech travails. But the most important revelation that was provided to us at the Iomega event was the new software that allowed you to created a virtualised copy of your computer that you could take onto any other computer and have it work as if it was right in front of you. Though it is unfortunate that it's quite difficult nowadays to differentiate on hardware, with amazing software there can be some really great things done! Amazing stuff.

Also high on my list was the iConnect, which lets you connect the device to a router and create several network attached hard drives and printers which could be easily accessed by a web interface. All very impressive, and definitely a good solution to those WHERE IS THAT PHOTO? Oh it's on Mom's Computer and it's in China, problems. It'd be best for a family like mine to create a central location to store our digital life.

Great to see a venerable brand come back! And I'm looking forward to more innovation from the wonderful folks over at Iomega.

Ok. I know this is borderline tacky, but this video is so alluring, the car though heavily disguised with stickers, screams sex and coupled with a German dude talking about driving in that crisp accent, all business and no compromise. Wow. This video really gets me interested in the 1 Series not even necessarily the M Coupe when it does come out.

An amazing holiday with amazing people. I'll let the photos speak for themselves but truly. Tracy, Min and Lincoln are awesome travel mates!

The only disappointment was that we didn't get to see the Cliffs of Moher but the MISTS of Moher. No matter, we got to stop at MINI-Moher on the way back too!

Also had some really good food in Ireland and left thoroughly feeling like I needed to return very soon!

P.S a properly poured Guinness is like drinking a beer milkshake. DELICIOUS!
