Rome: Day 1

I begin with this picture of my first day in Rome.

Rome First Day

I packed the night before. Typical guy right?

I left the great city of Coventry at 510 am. I had woken up at 455 am on the call of the taxi driver and I must say, twas’ quite a harrowing experience, showering, putting product into your hair, moisturising, putting clothes on, and still forgetting to switch my alarm clock off AND forgetting to CLOSE MY WINDOW! Nevertheless, I made out with all my stuff out of the house onto the waiting taxi to take me to Birmingham Airport where I’d begin the first leg of my journey.

The flight from B’ham was at 7 am and took me all the way down to Frankfurt. I was very lucky to be sitting behind a cute girl, BUT, she spent the whole time talking to this ugly guy next to her. Bah. Neverthless I landed and got off the plane tout suite. Frankfurt Airport is huge, but I didn’t think it was as nice as Munich Airport, it did however have more options in terms of food I thought. Munich is a little Meh, and very overpriced. I forget if this picture was of me getting of the BHX-FRA flight or FRA-FCO flight. But anyway here’s an aircraft I was on. I have to say this about Lufthansa’s service, efficient to perfection. The food served on EVERY SINGLE flight was the same. The SERVICE provided was the same, even the words spoken were pretty much the same. Efficiency taken to the extreme, I liked it but it really only made me miss the more personalised service of Singapore Airlines.

So I got to Roma and the first thing we did was go off to Gianicolo, after a hearty dinner at Pizza Al Taglio. It was the name of the style of Pizza as well but all in all very very delicious and SO much variety. Ate way too much and had some Gelato after as well. No pictures because I was TOO BUSY EATING!

Rome First Day

It presented me with a panoramic view of Roma, the Eternal City. A sight that takes your breath away and leaves you begging to explore every nook and every cranny of the city. The place simply feels like it was built for those who want to see and feel every bit that life has to offer. It was also at Gianicolo that I saw my first ever Punch and Judy show.

Fun, even though I didn’t understand a single word that was said.

Let me show you a picture of Garibaldi’s statue. It is quite something and unfortunately I have only a good picture of the rear of the statute.

After leaving the park proper, we went to see this nice little fountain that was recently cleaned up.

After all that gallivanting around, dinner beckoned. And we headed off to a small chain restaurant. I was really lucky because dinner was very good nevertheless even though it was technically part of a franchise. The food was hot and fresh and very tasty. I had the amatriciana served with hollow pasta that looked a little like spaghetti but was a whole different pasta.

Marina had Gnocchi with red sauce and Roberto, Gnocchi with White sauce.

My first dessert in Rome; alas, was the quintessential Italian dessert. Tiramisu. I was a little let down by this version of it though. I’ve had much better back home. Thankfully, I wasn’t to be disappointed again this trip :)

After dinner, we took a walk around the neighbourhood, where I happened on this sign.

If only I had the space for a second round. A restaurant owner after my own heart. :)

It was a long day and the next day would be filled with even more adventures in the city that will never end.
